A Much Improved ‘D’ but Still Problems in Net

Wow, I just can’t say enough about how improved the Hawks’ defense is this year.  So far I’ve seen backchecking (actual backchecking!), guys laying down to block shots and impede opponents’ lanes, and screening in front of the opposing net minder’s crease.  Finally I can say that the Hawks have a working offense and defense. Blackhawks’ Bittersweet Win over the Oilers

How  cool was it to see Jack Skille score that goal in tonight’s match-up against the Oilers?  Too bad they keep having to send him back down to Rockford.  I know, I know.  The cap.  Still, I’m excited to see him every time he’s on the ice.  (more…)

Missing Matt Walker Something Awful

Last night’s fight reminded me of one of the more memorable hockey fights from last season. Remember this one between Matt Walker and the Flames’ Brandon Prust? I loved it so much I hung an autographed still of this one on my hockey wall.

Here’s the Fight You Almost Certainly Missed Between Troy Brouwer and Jarome Iginla

Once again hockeyfights.com comes through.  Here’s last night’s fight between Troy Brouwer and Jarome Iginla during the Hawks/Flames game.

So Cool to See Cheli Back in Town!

After seeing Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, and Tony Esposito on the ice at the UC the other night, Chris Chelios being back in town is just the cherry on the sundae, even if he is skating with the Wolves.  Who knows?  Maybe his career will even surpass Gordie Howe’s.  (And if Cheli signs with the Wolves, does that mean Cheli’s Chili Bar will be coming back to town???)

Is It Versus or the Provisioners Making Fans’ Lives Miserable?

I would just like to take this opportunity to renew my disgust at the games being played between cable/satellite provisioners and “premium” channels like Versus.  I missed a history-making game last night (the Hawks coming back from a 5-0 deficit against the Flames to win in OT!) because Versus is monopolizing some of the Hawks games. Home Opener a Go-Go

What a home-opener last night at the UC between the Hawks and the Colorado Avalanche!  Almost makes you wish you were there. (Almost.)  But if I hadn’t been at home I wouldn’t have gotten to see the replay (about 6 times) of Niklas Hjalmarsson’s swing-batta-batta swing into the face of the Avs Darcy Tucker.  In a word: awesome.  And Hjalmy didn’t even get called for high-sticking! Bubba Sport: Awww Yeah Sports Fans…Gotta Getcha One!

Got one of these Bubba Sport football mugs for my birthday. Sweet huh?  It even has a bottle opener on the handle, although I haven’t had occasion to use it since I usually just drink coffee out of it.   I can fit half a pot of coffee in it.  Saves having to get up and down to repeatedly fill my coffee cup.  I call it my vat-o-coffee.  Yup, I will be enjoying my vat-o-coffee with the Marie Callender turkey pot I got in the oven.  Mmm…  Now, if only Bubba Sport made a hockey-themed mug! (Ya hear that Bubba Sport peops?)

I was visiting the Bohemian National Cemetery on North Pulaski recently and came upon this:

Back by Popular Demand…

I have been asked to go on with this blog even though I continue to have disdain for the Hawks’ ownership and management and their off-season dastardly deeds.  It has been explained to me that as a Hawks fan I must learn to separate my disgust with the Hawks’ decision-makers from my love for the Hawks themselves.  I have certainly learned to do this with the Cubs and so I guess the Hawks will be no different.  So, here I am back by popular demand and here we go with a new season.  Though it will probably not be as magical as the 2008-2009 season, it’s still hockey and hockey is like pizza; even when it’s bad it’s still pretty good.
