I Want to Believe

Last night’s 7-1 win over the Flames was breathtaking.  For the first time this season, it felt like the magic of last season had returned.  I can’t decide if that was because the Hawks have finally gelled with each other, or if the Flames just fell down, psyched out by the remembrance of the playoffs last season.  I want to believe it is the former, not the latter.

It was also nice to finally see the refs, in last night’s game at least, differentiating between roughing and fighting instead of carte blanche just calling a 5-minute major penalty for “fighting” whether the gloves were thrown down or not.  I want to see more of that proper kind of officiating, you know, where it’s a 5-minute major penalty for a real throw down (i.e. actual fighting); the kind that potentially draws blood.  That’s what a 5-minute major fighting penalty should look like.

As for last night’s game, it wasn’t Jarome Iginla instigating for once.  Last night, it was Dion Phaneuf who kept picking fights, some he was called for and some he wasn’t.  Even Brent Seabrook got into a scrap last night as did the Hawks’ little coming-along enforcer, Colin Fraser.  Hey why not.  The Hawks were up by several points, why not throw down the gloves a time or two, because, as ever, the Flames kept trash-talkin’ and instigating.  Perhaps the Flames should have spent less time jawin’ and scrappin’ and more time on their defense.  And perhaps they should have pulled Miikka Kiprusoff earlier. (A .750 save percentage over 40 minutes of play? Ouch!)

While we’re talking goal tenders, Cristobal Huet had another stellar night with a .964 save average.  I really do hope I get to eat crow over Huet.  It would be nice if he became the consistent, reliable goal tender we’ve always been told he can be.

And the goals were spectacular last night with Troy Brouwer, Kris Versteeg, Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd, Patrick Kane, and Ben Eager all scoring.  Versteeg scored twice, and Ben Eager netted his first goal of the season.  It truly was a sight to behold.

It was good to see Bryan Bickell again last night, too.  He only had a little over 11 minutes on ice, so it will be interesting to see how he does with a little more ice time.

And once again, the contributions of Niklas Hjalmarsson cannot be ignored.  It was Hjalmy’s stone-cold hit on Rene Bourque that amped the Hawks’ offense, inspiring them to score 5 times in the 2nd period. The only one that could’ve deserved that bull-dozing hit more than Bourque was Jarome Iginla.  Still, watching Hjalmy take out Bourque was like watching a Great White Shark breach the water and connect with massive, brute force with its intended target.  That would explain Hjalmarsson’s toothy grin while watching the replay from the bench.  This kid only gets better.  And so do the Hawks.  For the first time this season I have hope.  Actual hope.

Don’t give these refs too much praise now.
This prolly doesn’t belong on your page, but, did you see the garbage call, followed up by the junk decision of the NHL over that Neal hit in Dallas the other night?
Had that of been a ’star’, (no pun intended) this 2 game suspenson would have fell under the non-existent double standard rule, and the on ice call would have been overturned and wiped from the record.
The officiating so far this season has been the worst by far, and shows no signs of getting better.
Anyways, lets see how it goes when Huet gets into a steady groove, and Hossa finally shows up and shows what he can do for them on a full time scale.
Hopefully tonight they’ll put on a good show and bring back some of the emotions of the old time rivalry they once had with the Oilers.
    TTYL.

I haven’t known you long Jim, but you make me laugh every time you comment. Yup, you are so right about the NHL’s inconsistency. I’ve been complaining about that since last season and it’s actually gotten worse this season! Can’t say if the officiating this year has been the worst by far, but I’ll take your word for it. It’s certainly been the worst I’ve seen since I started watching hockey 6 years ago. No doubt.

I recently filled out a survey for the NHL and I suggested they hold a “seminar” (that’s what they call them) on inconsistent refereeing. Hey, if they can overly scrutinize fighting and so-called “dirty” hits ad nauseam, they can take a gander at the bad officiating.

Hey Jim, what you say we start a hockey “think tank” and start lobbying for stuff from the fan’s perspective. The GMs and owners get to do that, why can’t we???…lol….

Trust me, this IS the worst officiating by far, and the season is just ended its first quarter.
The name “Think Tank” will undoubtedly scare away the powers that be.
You as a Hawks fan should know that us little guys didn’t matter once upon a time, and the Wirtz Clan still has control, and reverting back to their old ways is still in the blood.
Besides, if every problem were ‘fixed’, we wouldn’t have much to talk about, let alone have a bitch session. ;)

Well I believe you about the officiating. Tonight’s game was another classic example. They didn’t call hardly anything. Well, I’ll get to that in my next post.
