Do you ever get that weird feeling that when the NHL is trying to sell a new rule that they pick certain teams to sell it on? For instance, earlier in the season the NHL seemed to pick the Flyers’ Chris Pronger to sell the need to make visors mandatory for all players in the NHL. Or how about when the NHL put rule 48.1 in place making checks to the head illegal and the Vancouver Canucks got called for it repeatedly.

Tonight the Blackhawks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5 to 2 and Viktor Stalberg scored his first NHL hat trick, but perhaps more memorable is that the Hawks were called for ‘instigating’ twice. So it looks like the Blackhawks will be the team that the NHL proves their instigating penalty on.

And what is instigating exactly? According to the NHL’s ever-changing rule book,

“A player who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).”

Does nobody think this is too severe? After all, Canucks’ Alex Burrows cheap shotted Bruins’ Shawn Thornton in the Canucks/Bruins game the other night, but nobody called constant bur-on-the-butt Burrows for instigating.

It also looks like the NHL is confusing an “aggressor” with an “instigator” as if they were one and the same. According to the NHL an “aggressor” is,

“…the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant.”

Um, yeah, but what do you call an Alex Burrows-type who repeatedly takes cheap shots on guys (hair pulling, biting, scratching, spearing, high-sticking) in order to entice them into fighting? See, because the dictionary defines instigating as “urging, provoking, or inciting some action or course” and in the case of Alex Burrows in that game the other night, it was he who instigated first. To put that in playground rules, Alex Burrows started it first!

But the NHL give themselves an out for bad refereeing:

“Referees are provided very wide latitude in the penalties with which they may impose under this rule. This is done intentionally to enable them to differentiate between the obvious degrees of responsibility of the participants either for starting the fighting or persisting in continuing the fighting. The discretion provided should be exercised realistically.”

Another way to define “wide latitude” is “subjectivity” ensuring that no two games are called exactly alike, or properly. Why subjectivity? Because refs have preferences for certain teams and dislikes for others, and because the NHL rules are so vague as to be interpreted in many different ways. For instance, if the instigating rule were a law it wouldn’t hold water; it would be voided for vagueness. So why should the NHL purposely leave the instigating rule vague so as to ensure confusion and bad calls, i.e. improperly refereed games?

And I guess I can understand why they created the penalty for being the 3rd man to engage in a fight (the old “3rd man in rule”) to guarantee that NHL fights didn’t turn into bench-clearers, but coming to the aid of a teammate after he got checked dirty — like Steve Montador and Jamal Mayers in tonight’s game who were defending Andrew Brunette and Niklas Hjalmarsson respectively — shouldn’t be instigating or a game misconduct. These kinds of rules are ruining the integrity of hockey and need to stop!

My gosh, did you see Niklas Hjalmarsson get pounded on the ice tonight? He was on the business end of a dirty check to the head from Blue Jackets’ Jared Boll and a nasty high-stick to the eye from Tomas Kubalik. Granted the high-stick was an accident, but the dirty hit certainly wasn’t and deserved an answer from Jamal Mayers. So I disagree with the whole “instigating” penalty as it’s defined by the NHL and as it’s being enforced by the refs. I understand the fine line the NHL walks between trying to keep the players safe and over-enforcement, but all these rules are ruining hockey. Seriously, I’m with Don Cherry on this one: If you overly penalize fighting, you will ruin the character of the game and therefore the game itself.

That said, congratulations to Viktor Stalberg on his hat trick and to Dave Bolland on his shorty goal; Tazer (who took a puck to the head off a deflected shot from Duncan Keith in the 1st period) and Jelly go ice your heads; and hey NHL, can we cool it on the instigation penalties for one hot minute???

Hey refs, how about an instigating penalty on constant troublemaker Alex Burrows??? And hey NHL, how about a suspension on Burrows for a history of instigating and goonery? Milan Lucic wouldn’t have left the bench had Alex Burrows not cheap-shotted Shawn Thornton in the face. Hey, remember when Alex Burrows bit Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron in game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals last year? Cause it looks like the refs forgot!

To be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to this year’s crop of Blackhawks new-comers. Nobody likes change, at least not as much as there has been, and so it’s been hard these past two seasons to watch some stellar veterans go (although when I heard lackluster under-performer Brian Campbell had finally got the boot I almost threw a party).

However, in pre-season play it has been delightful to watch Brandon Pirri’s rising star. This kid is amazing! He almost had a hat trick in last night’s loss to the Penguins. And while the guy in the Hawaiian shirt at the bar where I was watching the game disagreed with me, the call on Pirri for “interference” in the last minute or so of the game was in error. Unless I missed something, it looked like Pirri was just following through with a check on the boards, though it was difficult, judging from the camera angle, to see where the puck had gone. What wasn’t hard to miss was Pirri on the ground, on his back, getting his ears boxed by, it looked like Pens’ Zybnek Michalek. Still, it looks like Pirri will go far. Apparently opponents think so too or Pirri wouldn’t have become an early target. So bang on Pirri. You’ll get that hat trick yet!

And speaking of pummelings, how in the hell could Red Wings’ coach Mike Babcock defend that nasty hit to the head from Wings’ defenseman Brendan Smith on Hawks’ winger Ben Smith during the September 28th pre-season game??? Babcock called Brendan Smith’s resulting suspension “extreme.” Really Babcock? Extreme? You know what’s extreme is when you get your bell rung so hard that you can’t move, have no idea where you are, and need a trainer and your teammates to help you off the ice! Babcock’s comments really shocked me. Normally he is pretty level-headed about such things, but not this time.

You can clearly see from the video that Brendan Smith intended to throw a shoulder as his elbow was flailing out well after the hit. (In other words, the shoulder and elbow were going and there was momentum there well after the hit.):

It clearly wasn’t an accident and the NHL was more than justified in suspending Brendan Smith for the remainder of the pre-season and for 5 games of the regular season. Well done NHL, and rule 48.1 concerning ‘illegal checks to the head’ will be a good one if applied and enforced properly.

What additionally concerns me is that the refs weren’t calling many of these goony hits during the Sept. 28 Hawks/Red Wings game. I saw lots of elbows and shoulders being thrown and spearing well before the hit on Ben Smith, so part of the blame for Ben Smith’s injury must lie with the officiating. Too many missed calls. Oh but the refs didn’t miss a beat in sending Brent Seabrook to the box for a five-minute major for “fighting” when Seabrook was just trying to defend Ben Smith. Really? That’s what constitutes fighting now? I didn’t even see Seabs throw a punch! Third-man-in rule maybe, but if you call a major, it better be…well…major.

And sorry Brendan Smith. I don’t buy your aw-shucks routine, your apology to Ben Smith, or your lame explanation that you were “never targeting his head.” Perhaps the minor leagues will teach you about playing respectable hockey. Shame on Mike Babcock too. There is no defending that kind of hit, though it’s not unexpected from the Red Wings, one of the gooniest teams in hockey. (They used to be THE gooniest team in hockey ’til the Canucks started giving them a run for their money.) Still, the Hawks got the ultimate revenge by winning over the Red Wings, 4-3, a win that was clearly for Ben Smith.

And speaking of injuries, it is unfortunate to lose Viktor Stalberg to a knee injury before the season has even started. We eagerly anticipate his return of course; the Hawks need and clearly miss his grit, though Michael Frolik exhibits a fair amount of grittiness too.

Grit is something the defensemen have needed the past few seasons too, and it looks like the Hawks have beefed up by pairing Niklas Hjalmarsson with Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith with Nick Leddy. I love these pairings and hope they continue. I also love that Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are on separate lines. These two may work well together on special teams, but Jonathan Toews can excel much more without having to constantly set Kaner up for sweet goals. I also don’t think Patrick Kane is effective as a center, but time will bear that out I’m sure.

Also on kind of a sad note, I was sorry to see Marty Turco go after last season. I thought maybe he had another season in him with the Hawks if for no other reason than to impart some of his veteran moves to the up-and-comers, but if he had to be on his way, so be it. Corey Crawford is coming along nicely, though I still miss Antti Niemi. And, hopefully it is not in doubt that Alexander Salak should be back-up net-minder. Ray Emery just doesn’t have what it takes, at least, not yet.

All-in-all it looks like the kids are alright.

In last night’s Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, once again Canucks Alex Burrows provoked Bruins Milan Lucic. Burrows feigned tripping over Lucic’s stick during a neutral zone face-off and Lucic about burst a blood vessel trying to point out Burrows’ embellishment to the zebras. Yet inexplicably, Lucic was called for “tripping” instead of just Burrows being called for unsportsmanlike conduct (i.e. “diving”).

But, if Burrows was caught diving, then why was Lucic guilty of tripping when his stick was simply on the ice and Burrows feigned tripping over it? If you review the video, you can clearly see that while Lucic’s stick is on the ice, Burrows animatedly trips himself over Lucic’s stick. As noted by NBC commentators Doc Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, both Lucic and Burrows had been warned not to try any funny stuff; that the refs had a no-tolerance policy particularly for Burrows’ shenanigans and that Burrows would not be given the benefit of the doubt. Yet Burrows was guilty of diving a couple of times last night, possibly several times last night. Still, Lucic was called for “tripping”? But he didn’t do anything! Does Lucic have a history of embellishments like Burrows does? No, so why not give Lucic the benefit of the doubt???

Although, in all fairness, Lucic did give Burrows the finger, actually several, in Game 3. Because Burrows had bitten Bruins Patrice Bergeron in Game 1 and it went ignored by the NHL, Lucic thought he’d offer up his fingers to Burrows in Game 3 as if to say “Wanna munch on my fingers too Burrows?” See video below:

Still, if you put Alex Burrows’ name in a search engine, you’ll find a history of embellishments, unsportsmanlike conduct, trash-talking and a whole host of other unbecoming behavior (like when Burrows pulled Duncan Keith’s hair in 2009). Can you say the same about Lucic?

I can’t believe the NHL didn’t suspend Canucks’ Alex Burrows for biting, that’s BITING, Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron in game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals! Alex Burrows has a reputation for goon hockey. Need I remind Blackhawks fans about Alex Burrows’ hair-pulling incident during a scrap with Duncan Keith in 2009? It’s bad enough being that goony, but Burrows has a history of slap-happy girl fights and so it is baffling why the NHL would look the other way when Burrows again not only did something dirty, but then lied about it. It just lowers the bar for the sport and depicts hockey as a sport engaged in and watched by uneducated dullards.

We hear all the time about how hockey players are supposed to be the gentlemen of the sports world. Well, with goons like Burrows and the NHL looking the other way, not so much. I’m all for old school, smash-mouth hockey, but keep the gloves up; no hitting below the belt. And yes, biting someone (or pulling their hair) is the equivalent of hitting below the belt.

Geez Burrows, when are you going to man up already??? Even when I was a little girl I didn’t fight as girly as you do!

It sucks to lose to the Red Wings…in OT no less. Still, many players put in a good game. Dustin Byfuglien, who played 24 minutes in today’s game, just keeps getting better and better as a defenseman. I really hope he stays on D. Duncan Keith too played a hard game with 27 minutes on ice. But then, we’ve come to expect that from the guy who for a while there played almost 30 minutes in every game. Credit goes to Brent Seabrook too who in the last game with the Avs had 5 hits and in this game with the Red Wings had 3. He is averaging more hits than anyone. We have really needed to see an amped up ‘D’ and Seabs has delivered.

Thanks for the season so far Hawks, and now on to the playoffs! Go Hawks!

P.S. Hats off to the 4th line too. They used to play about 8 minutes or so a game, and now they play about 12 minutes a game. They’ve earned the ice time with their points contribution of late, particularly Colin Fraser. Keep it up Fraz!

Mere weeks after being dangerously clocked on the boards by James Wisniewski, Brent Seabrook had a go at Brad Winchester in tonight’s Hawks/Blues game. That’s not what’s necessarily notable (nor are the resulting “roughing,” “fighting,” and even “game misconduct” calls on Seabrook). What is noteworthy is that, just like the Alex Burrows hair-pulling incident last season, Winchester too pulled Brent Seabrook’s hair during the ensuing mêlée. But Winchester had to add his own personal touch to set himself above Alex Burrows by grabbing Brent Seabrook by the nose!

It’s lame enough to grab a guy by the hair, but by the beak??? Really? Isn’t that a little like grabbing a guy with a piercing by his nose ring in a bar fight? Or kicking a guy in the cubes? It goes against the bro code and it’s a cheap shot. Ok, so the Blues are out of playoff contention and have to act as the spoilers. But no respect can come from cheap shots. Still, I think the Hawks had plenty to say by scoring four goals in the first period. Ha! Take that baby Blues! (And in the coming periods it would be nice to see the Hawks have a go at T.J. Oshie and David Backes. They’re just crying out for a comeupance!)

P.S. Way to go on that goal Bickell the pickle! Same for Duncan Keith, Ben Eager, and Kris Versteeg who all scored in the first period.

P.P.S. Loving Dustin Byfuglien as a d-man. I know he used to be a d-man and I’m wondering why anyone would ever have made him a forward. Let’s keep this guy on D. Seems that’s where he’s most at home.

Update: The NHL suspended Wisniewski for 8 games without pay. Good! I hope this means that instead of adversely affecting all players when dirty hits happen, the NHL sees that they need only punish the offenders, and even more harshly repeat offenders like Wisniewski (and Ovechkin). Thank you NHL for finally getting it right!

When the Blackhawks traded James ‘Wiz’ Wisniewski last season, I was not shy about saying what a mistake that was. How could the Blackhawks trade a valued and tough d-man like that? Since then, the Hawks have been struggling with their ‘D’ no question about it. But watching as Wiz and Brent Seabrook exchanged pleasantries before the first intermission in tonight’s Hawks/Ducks game and then watching Wisniewski gun for Brent Seabrook in the 2nd period, charging across the ice and purposely leaving his skates to take Seabs out by the head?! Oh, them’s fightin’ words Wiz! And are you kidding me with just that “charging” call? What? No automatic ejection?

At least Duncan Keith rushed in to box Wisniewski’s ears after that dirty hit. Similarly, Nick Boynton more than proved his worth in having a go at Wisniewski in the last minute of the game. If only Boynton had gotten some good shots under Wiz’s visor!

And seriously, if ever we Hawks fans had to prove that the ‘War Room’ in Toronto was out to get us, this game would live on in infamy as proof! This isn’t like the Alexander Ovechkin hit on Brian Campbell. When Ovi hit Soupy, I’m not so sure there was “intent” there like everybody keeps saying. Did Ovi intend to hit Soupy that hard, or is Brian Campbell just that crunchy? However, when you take a running skate from the blue line, like James Wisniewski did, and then shoulder and forearm a guy in the head while taking a running leap off your skates, I think you can safely be said to be gunning for someone! Judging from Joel Quenneville’s reaction on the bench, I think he agreed.

And yes, while the NHL will certainly review this, will they rightfully punish James Wisniewski (meaning a big fine and multiple game suspensions), or simply take it out on the whole of the NHL by restricting players even more? No NHL, for the nine millionth time, you don’t need to crack down on fighting or body checking. You simply need to more harshly punish offenders. That’s all! And you can start by throwing the book at James Wisniewski because while Wiz played on, Brent Seabrook was out having a very unpleasant MRI. (And he will probably be out for several games hereafter with a nasty concussion.)

P.S. Props go to Corey Crawford for maintaining poise during what was clearly a nerve-racking game!

There were many goon moments in tonight’s 2-1 Hawks win over the Penguins. The Penguins trash-talked and were guilty of cheap shots and picking fights. In fact, and I never thought I’d say this, there were too many scuffles. The Penguins were obviously using their gooniness as part of their strategy, and too many times the Hawks did not keep their composure, not that you could blame them. Still, for all the Penguins’ jawin’ and scrappin’ the Hawks still took them.

There was a little bit of a to-do in the 1st period with Penguins’ Matt Cook and Hawks’ Duncan Keith. Matt Cook delivered a tough hit on one end and then at the other end Duncan Keith elbowed Cook in the face. Keith got a 2-minute interference call, though it could’ve been a 5-minute major or even an ejection. (Cook would later pay Dunc back with some knuckles to Dunc’s jaw which laid him out on his knees.) Seconds later, Marian Hossa scored a stunning goal off of some agile passing from Patrick Kane and Brian Campbell. (Yes, Brian Campbell!)

Then the Pens’ Evgeni Malkin went at Colin Fraser in the dwindling minutes of the 2nd. Geno had Fraser on his back on the ice and still the ref didn’t intervene. I’m all for a good scrap, but I think you can call off the dogs when you’ve got a guy on his back!

Evgeni Malkin struck again in the last minute and a half of the 3rd period with a pass to Jordan Staal who put it past Antti Niemi for a goal after the Pens had pulled Marc-André Fleury from the net. Still, the Hawks would battle back in the overtime period with Kris Versteeg hammering the puck past Fleury for the win.

Truthfully I was a little surprised that Hawks’ secondary goalie Antti Niemi was put in net against Pens’ Marc-André Fleury. I thought maybe it would’ve been wiser to put Niemi in last night’s game against the Predators and put Cristobal Huet in net against the defending champion Penguins tonight. But Niemi proved me and other doubters wrong. He held the Penguins scoreless through two, almost three, periods.

All-in-all, an amazing game. The kind you DVR and watch over and over if only to watch the Penguins eat it.
