As I said in yesterday’s post, referee Dan O’Halloran killed the Hawks in games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals. He called so many penalties on the Hawks while ignoring so many others from the Flyers that it would be safe to argue that O’Halloran alone cost the Hawks games 3 and 4.

In tonight’s game 5, it looked like Dustin Byfuglien agreed when during a check of Flyers’ d-man Kimmo Timonen at about the 10 or 11 minute mark of the 3rd period, he took out Dan O’Halloran as well. Two goons with one stone. It was a thing of beauty! O’Halloran seemed to know that hit was meant for him too by the look on his face. Karma can be tricky Danny boy, so you just better watch out. The hockey gods don’t seem to like your intentional missed calls on the Flyers.

Finally, just to add insult to injury, Hawks’ Dustin Byfuglien scored the last goal of the 7-4 victory over the Flyers with an empty-netter in the last minute-and-a-half of the game with Dan O’Halloran having to rule it a good goal. So sweet. Go Hawks! Get that cup!

P.S. Hats off to Q for taking Big Buff and Kaner off the first line and moving Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky up with Toews. It totally threw off the Flyers. They couldn’t put the bullseye on any one player and with Buff checking up and down like a mad man, it was discombobulating to the Flyers. Hopefully Niklas Hjalmarsson can figure his game out by game 6 though, because we need him blocking shots. Don’t know what’s up with him, but he has that deer-in-headlights look about him.

Congrats to the Hawks for hammering the final nail into the Vancouver Canucks. The boys are looking a little tired out there, and understandably so. As I noted in a prior post about Matt Walker, seems the Hawks are missing some of the grit from last season most notably seen in players like Matt Walker. But when push came to shove with the Canucks, some of the bigger, burlier players like Dustin Byfuglien and Ben Eager pushed back. And that made all the difference, as did outstanding goal tending on Antti Niemi’s part.

On to San Jose! Good luck boys!

When I was a kid, we used to have these popsicles and they would just gush and ooze that artificially-flavored, sticky goodness all over the place. We called them gushers. (If you’re from New England you’d say “gushah” like “noreastah”.) Similarly, injuries to the head, particularly the forehead area, are often called gushers. I’m not sure if it’s that there is more blood flow to the head because of the carotid artery or what, but any time there is an injury sustained to the forehead, it just gushes. Such was the case in the injury sustained by Canucks’ Shane O’Brien in the Hawks 4-1 loss to the Canucks tonight.

I know what Canucks players and Canuckleheads will say. They’ll say that Dustin Byfuglien meant to slash Shane O’Brien wide open above the eye on that high-stick (which, I would agree should have been called as a high-stick but wasn’t). And oh yeah, O’Brien’s head just gushed. There was blood everywhere. The ice crew spent a good long while scraping off the red parts. Still, I don’t think Big Buff was gunning for O’Brien. Buff is more of an annoyer than an aggressor. It’s no secret that Byfuglien has made an art form of harassing goal tenders, Roberto Luongo being his favorite. Buff sprays snow and likes to bump net minders, but he’s not one to draw blood…on anyone, net minder or not. So, cry foul if you want Canucks players and fans, but it was an accident. Yes, players must control their sticks and so for that Byfuglien should’ve been called for high-sticking, but the Canucks have gotten away with quite a few hooks, holds, spears, and trips themselves. So it goes both ways.

I’m sure Hawks fans will join me in wishing Shane O’Brien well (in addition to Canucks’ d-man Sami Salo who was taken to the hospital in an ambulance after sustaining what looked like a lower-body injury…a puck to the testicles perhaps?). But what goons around, comes around. I guess there is such a thing as goon karma. ‘Nough said.

All throughout this series with the Vancouver Canucks I have repeatedly been amazed at the classlessness of Canucks’ fans and the Canucks’ organization itself. At every game in Vancouver, The Star Spangled Banner was butchered by some decrepit, sorry excuse for a vocalist who hurriedly warbled through our beloved national anthem in what was clearly an expeditious fulfillment of the requirement. So very disrespectful Vancouver…even for you! Compare that embarrassment with the Blackhawks’ vocalist Jim Cornelison who always sings O Canada with poise, sincerity, and beauty.

Also of note was a Vancouver newspaper that made sport [See page 1, yes page 1 (!), of the preceding link] of Patrick Kane’s incident with a Buffalo, New York, cab driver last summer. I don’t mind anyone picking on Patrick Kane for that incident. I certainly have, because from what I know of Kane as a person, I don’t like him, and I especially don’t like him as a hockey player. But, what is conspicuous about the Vancouver paper poking fun at Kane is that they chose playoff time to do it, which is just sort of lame. That was so last summer Vancouver. You should’ve commented on it then. Doing it during the Hawks/Canucks series just comes off as sour grapes and poor sportsmanship. Once again, real classy Vancouver!

And last, but certainly not least, is the goon hockey undertaken by the Canucks in this series. I guess that shouldn’t surprise us. But what is chuckle worthy is the whining of Roberto Luongo about how the Blackhawks are supposedly engaging in goon hockey! Wayne Gretzky last year held the trophy for the whiningest individual in hockey, but even Luongo could give “The Great One” a run for his money in this series!

Last season I used to chide Dustin Byfuglien for face washing and otherwise harassing Roberto Luongo during Hawks/Canucks games. My criticism came mostly from the fact that the Hawks would have to penalty kill an avoidable goal tender interference call; that and I don’t like goon hockey because it’s like cheating. Winning a hockey game because of gooniness isn’t winning the game based on expertise, but rather because of what a team can get away with. So if the Canucks are going to engage in goon hockey (which they regularly do) then I think it only fair that the Hawks answer with a little bit of gooniness themselves. And in this series, keeping pressure on the net and on Luongo, has certainly been one of the greatest keys to the Hawks’ success. So why should Luongo expect a classier version of play than his own team engages in? And why should he expect an opposing team to change his diapers? Just because your save percentage has gone below .900 doesn’t mean you get to be a crybaby. So to Roberto Luongo I say: WAH! Tell it to your mama.

As for the overall play in this series so far, I’m surprised there haven’t been more scuffles. What, no dirty hits or cheap shots from Kevin Bieksa? What, no hair pulling from Alex Burrows? What, no reason for Ben Eager and Dustin Byfuglien to beat the stuffing out of you two? Bummer. Well, there’s always next season!

And hats off to Dustin Byfuglien and Jonathan Toews for their hat tricks in this series! As the adage goes, victory is the best revenge. And how! Yes, who wouldn’t prefer a couple of hat tricks (or even a Gordie Howe hat trick) to just a donnybrook? It also shows you what Jonathan Toews is capable of when he doesn’t have to babysit Patrick Kane at every turn. As Red Wings coach Mike Babcock told The Hockey News, “to me the guy you build the franchise around is the Toews kid…He’s a will machine. He just keeps coming and keeps coming…” And that’s why he has more points in the Stanley Cup Playoffs than any other. (Yes, even more than leading NHL scorer Henrik Sedin!…Nelson Muntz finger point and “Ha! Ha!”)

And finally, there is a little bit of vindication for Huet haters (or Huet dislikers) like myself. Some have been afraid of the backlash and so haven’t been vocal about the Hawks needing a new net minder, but the sentiment was still there. I’m just sorry the Hawks wasted so much of this season trying to beat a dead horse. Lots of fans knew that given a chance, Antti Niemi would rise to the challenge and be a great net minder. I’m just grateful the Hawks organization figured that out in time for the playoffs. Sorry baby Huey. I think your tenure in Chicago may be over.

So, da be, da be, da be, that’s all folks… at least for now. But remember Canuckleheads…stay classy!

P.S. Oh yeah, and stop calling Byfuglien “Buffy.”

It sucks to lose to the Red Wings…in OT no less. Still, many players put in a good game. Dustin Byfuglien, who played 24 minutes in today’s game, just keeps getting better and better as a defenseman. I really hope he stays on D. Duncan Keith too played a hard game with 27 minutes on ice. But then, we’ve come to expect that from the guy who for a while there played almost 30 minutes in every game. Credit goes to Brent Seabrook too who in the last game with the Avs had 5 hits and in this game with the Red Wings had 3. He is averaging more hits than anyone. We have really needed to see an amped up ‘D’ and Seabs has delivered.

Thanks for the season so far Hawks, and now on to the playoffs! Go Hawks!

P.S. Hats off to the 4th line too. They used to play about 8 minutes or so a game, and now they play about 12 minutes a game. They’ve earned the ice time with their points contribution of late, particularly Colin Fraser. Keep it up Fraz!

Mere weeks after being dangerously clocked on the boards by James Wisniewski, Brent Seabrook had a go at Brad Winchester in tonight’s Hawks/Blues game. That’s not what’s necessarily notable (nor are the resulting “roughing,” “fighting,” and even “game misconduct” calls on Seabrook). What is noteworthy is that, just like the Alex Burrows hair-pulling incident last season, Winchester too pulled Brent Seabrook’s hair during the ensuing mêlée. But Winchester had to add his own personal touch to set himself above Alex Burrows by grabbing Brent Seabrook by the nose!

It’s lame enough to grab a guy by the hair, but by the beak??? Really? Isn’t that a little like grabbing a guy with a piercing by his nose ring in a bar fight? Or kicking a guy in the cubes? It goes against the bro code and it’s a cheap shot. Ok, so the Blues are out of playoff contention and have to act as the spoilers. But no respect can come from cheap shots. Still, I think the Hawks had plenty to say by scoring four goals in the first period. Ha! Take that baby Blues! (And in the coming periods it would be nice to see the Hawks have a go at T.J. Oshie and David Backes. They’re just crying out for a comeupance!)

P.S. Way to go on that goal Bickell the pickle! Same for Duncan Keith, Ben Eager, and Kris Versteeg who all scored in the first period.

P.P.S. Loving Dustin Byfuglien as a d-man. I know he used to be a d-man and I’m wondering why anyone would ever have made him a forward. Let’s keep this guy on D. Seems that’s where he’s most at home.

Oh, and since I’m in the middle of watching tonight’s Blackhawks game against the Oilers, I just have to ask, because I’m thinking of it, did Dustin Byfuglien get a nose job? I swear his nose is smaller and even shorter! Anybody else notice that? Also, I think the fact that Jonathan Toews must be exhausted is throwing off the equilibrium of the team. Give this kid a break and let him sit out a few games before he collapses would ya?!

Along those lines, do you think when Niklas Hjalmarsson goes to take a shower in the morning he sees a whole bunch of purple circles on his chest? Brings new meaning to “taking one for the team”! And do you think when Marian Hossa looks in the mirror he thinks he looks like Ziggy too?

Line changing seems to be the name of the game of late for the Hawks. On the Jonathan Toews line now is Patrick Kane again and Troy Brouwer. Hmm, not bad in terms of forechecking and all out aggressiveness. And how about that Madden line with Kris Versteeg and Dustin Byfuglien on wing; Madden who has steadily increased his face-off wins and overall performance? And Jordan Hendry replaced Tomas Kopecky (Bout time somebody did!) on the Colin Fraser line. Has Coach Q finally solidified the offensive lines? Well, let’s hope so. Let’s hope Q has finally found a winning combination.

And I’m really loving Ben Eager and Colin Fraser as co-enforcers in the absence of Adam Burish. Bur could do no better in terms of quality of scraps. Once Eager and Fraser learned the fine art of discernment — you know, figuring out when to drop the gloves and when not to — these two became indispensable. Bang on boys! (Literally.)

With the Hawks getting their rough-housing out of the way a few times in the first period of tonight’s game against the Blues, it was no surprise that they waited past the first half of the first period to score. The long-suffering Troy Brouwer scored one past Blues’ net-minder Ty Conklin with relative ease off an assist by Jonathan Toews. And, with a little over two minutes left in the first, Brian Campbell also scored on a slap shot thanks to a screen from Kris Versteeg.

And with a little over three minutes left in the 2nd, Jonathan Toews came around back of the goal in what looked like it would be a wrap-around and then deftly passed to Marian Hossa who shot quickly for the third goal.

The rest of the 2nd and a little over two minutes left in the 3rd period it was hum-drum hockey until Dustin Byfuglien followed through with a clean check of Blues’ Barret Jackman. Then Blues’ Brad Winchester and Big Buff had a bit of a go, but nothing major. In the last 20 seconds of the game, Blues’ Cam Janssen encroached on Cristobal Huet and Huet pushed back until Brent Sopel swooped in to protect Huet. Ben Eager then scrapped with B.J. Crombeen, even though Crombeen refused to drop his glove. Regardless, the Hawks would take the Blues 3-0 in a shut-out for Cristobal Huet.

P.S. And good news on the Patrick Kane front. Despite that nasty trip into the boards during that last game between the Hawks and the Lightning wherein Kane hit his eye, Kaner is back. Is he ok? Of course. He hit his head, and he doesn’t use that often enough for that to have been cause for concern. Yet, for some unknown reason he was the star of the game tonight even though Cristobal Huet had the shut-out. Well, I guess that’s just good P.R. and of course you need those kids to get their parents in the those seats!
